Losing a loved one in custody can leave families with grief, confusion, and unanswered questions. Some families may wish to seek an independent second autopsy for additional clarity and peace of mind.
The Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative provides free independent second autopsies in certain in-custody and suspicious death cases, including prison and jail deaths.
According to the organization, accepted cases may include:
- A free second autopsy
- Review by board-certified forensic pathologists
- Preliminary findings and a final report
The organization recommends reaching out as soon as possible after death, ideally within 1 to 3 days and before embalming or burial.
